Art deco and Bauhaus- inspired collection by Tucurinca

The 30-70 collection is Santa Marta studio Tucurinca’s gift to contemporary design. At least that’s how Tucurinca founder and designer Rafael Zúñiga sees it, inspired by his trip to last year’s Maison & Objet design fair in Paris.

“Our chairs have always been focused on functionality and what we can do with what we have. With this collection, our intention is to move away from what we call ‘design of subsistence’ and become part of the current trends market and what we see as today’s world of design,” says Zúñiga, who worked alongside local design studio Pargo Estudio to create a more opulent and European-inspired collection.

Aesthetically, the deep blue and intense pink outdoor furniture collection is a reference to the work of Cuban architect Manuel Carrerá, specifically the Teatro Santa Marta and La Gobernación de Magdalena, both built in the 1940s. Carrerá, who produced the majority of his buildings in Barranquilla, but also in Cartagena, Ciénaga, Havana, and Santa Marta, designed edifices that echo the art deco and Bauhaus movements of the era, with geometric and circular forms at the center of his designs.

The name 30-70 is a mathematical justification for the color distribution of the collection, the aim being that the percentage of color in each piece be 30% pink and 70% blue. Finally, 30-70 also references the time period in which the city of Santa Marta experienced a cultural and social boom, a product of the political stability and banana bonanza of the era, rendering 30-70 a common thread in this noteworthy woven collection. tucurinca.com.co
