Mortar & pestle, inspired by antiquity
Under the initiative of its founder and director of Medellin Design Week David del Valle, TuTaller Design develops and reinterprets objects that serve for everyday use. The studio’s signature design, the Mortar & Pestle, is inspired by the smooth, rounded edges of the ancient Quimbaya relic, the poporo, a vessel attributed with social status and mystical powers.
The studio combined the archetypal shape with the local tradition of using a mortar and pestle to grind spices, seeds or other cooking elements, and cast it in deep black resin.
Combining features of pre-Columbian culture with Western influence, the result is a modern design object that serves not only as a tool for the kitchen but also as a sleek decorative piece that evokes the country in form as well as concept. tutaller.com.co
