Inside a small, 80 square-meter store within Lima’s Mario Testino Museum is Bodega MATE, the ideal place for lovers of Latin American design.

“We carefully select brands that rescue and honor traditional craftsmanship and artisan techniques, while also offering a chic product,” says Vanessa Rodriguez, director of Bodega MATE. Careful is the key word here, with the eye of Venezuelan jewelry designer and Bodega MATE head curator Mónica Sordo behind every selection.

“Here in Bodega, the products don’t compete with one another,” adds Rodriguez, “Monica narrows the options down so that they can all coexist in the same space and you can get one complete outfit from them.”

Photographer Mario Testino’s vision for the store was that it would provide a platform for Latin American designers seeking to internationalize their brand, a place where they could show the best of their wares in a closely curated space.

Bodega MATE currently offers a selection of more than 30 designers from seven Latin American countries, and aims to grow to all of Latin America in the near future. The list of designers is truly impeccable, each representing a commitment to their country’s artisanal tradition, and each a work of art in itself.

Be sure to check out the permanent exhibition at the MATE museum, including Alta Moda, a series of photographic portraits of Peruvians local to the mountainous region of Cusco, wearing traditional festive attire.
